Learning! With PushingUpRoses: DosBox

This is a very quick tutorial on how to run a game using DosBox. If you have never used DosBox and you really want to, this video may help! For advanced users, hopefully the beginning of the video was entertaining and you found some enjoyment. Edutainment! Please view in full screen to see the text.

    Oh, I learned two things: One is “I don’t need to set up a screen grabber when using DosBox to make videos” and the other one… these are quite a lot of games you have in there, Roses.

    Pro tip: If you use quotation marks when mounting a directory as a drive, the path you’re using (that is: the drive as well as any directories all the way up to the one you’re trying to make the root one) can contain overly long folder names as well as spaces(DOSBox usually abbreviates them to the first 6 letters, then ~1, ~2, etc – in MSDOS, your files can’t have names longer that 8 characters plus 3 letters extension).

    Thanks for making this video Roses. I’ve been wanting to try DOSbox for a while now but I was afraid it would be much more complicated than it is. I look forward to seeing more of this new series in the future.

    I got this to play Daggerfall, I got dosbox to work, but I cant get past Daggerfalls combat system lol

    Personally, I’ve used DOSBox before, and I can still say that this was educational and entertaining (edutaining?). Looking forward to more Learning! videos!

    DosBox is the best.
    You can even install Windows 3.1 in DosBox and play early windows-only titles like Mordor or Lost Mind of Dr.Brain which are difficult to get running on modern windows systems.

    This was fantastic.  I’ve used DOSBox before, and I even recorded an LP with it once, and I still found this very entertaining.  I very much enjoy the little silent jokes you used (Print Money, Herpdedoo, etc) as well.  You have a real flair for this.  Well done! :-D

    Turrican II is available on DOSBox! Also, Weird Al commits Heresy against the Almighty SID!

    You can also just drag and drop the executable (.exe) file from Windows Explorer into DOSBox and it should run from there.

    Good tutorial.

    Suggesting the mount step might be necessary because “computers are pretty much stupid”* might give people the wrong idea though, and this led to people trying something like “mount c c:” instead of “mount c c:games”.

    By keeping your games in a specific folder and using mount on that folder specifically (as demonstrated), you limit the damage that buggy games and dos viruses can do! (ie. at worst your copy of dosbox, games folder and it’s contents can be corrupted)

    *Computers ARE “stupid” but what they do almost always what they have instructions to do (whether from user or sysop or programmer), don’t get me started on why programs crash after dividing by zero (integer op)…

    I’m having issues with the footage, specifically all I get is sound only, I know I’m missing something but anyone care to toss a tip?  I’ve got a feeling it has something to do with a codec or even a suggestion for a file converter

    Nice DOSBox tutorial!

    One thing I must note: While I adore DOSBox for recreating my fondest childhood memories (besides Carmen Sandiego for the moment…), I have to mention the wonderful, but sadly Mac OS X-only app Boxer, from boxerapp.com!  A frontend like Boxer really makes running DOSBox a breeze.  And Boxer is definitely the best frontend I’ve used for DOSBox.
